The Space Between Us
A Proposed Permanent Public Sculpture for Triangle Park, Takoma, D.C.
The Space Between Us is a proposed permanent public sculpture by Washington, D.C.–based artist Anna U Davis. The approximately ten-foot-tall work is being developed for Triangle Park at 6911 4th Street NW in Takoma, D.C., where Davis has lived and worked since 2007.
The sculpture grows from the visual language of Davis’s Frocasian figures, which she has developed for more than twenty years. One side presents a seated figure in a moment of reflection and vulnerability. The reverse contains many eyes, shifting the work toward ideas of witness, surveillance, responsibility, race and community memory. Visitors will be encouraged to move around the sculpture and experience how its meaning changes from different viewpoints.
The project is designed to become a strong visual anchor for Triangle Park while respecting the character and current use of the site. The proposal preserves the park’s seating, trees, Little Free Library and pedestrian access. Modest landscaping improvements and a clear walking area around the sculpture would help integrate the artwork into the existing garden.
Community involvement has been central to the project. Davis has presented the proposal to local residents and organizations, spoken with neighborhood businesses, gathered signatures and support letters, and consulted with District agencies.
The project is currently proposed and remains dependent on grant funding, engineering, permitting and final site approvals.

The Space Between Us es una propuesta de escultura pública permanente de la artista Anna U Davis, radicada en Washington, D.C. La obra, de aproximadamente diez pies de altura, está siendo desarrollada para Triangle Park, ubicado en 6911 4th Street NW, en Takoma, D.C., donde Davis vive y trabaja desde 2007.
La escultura surge del lenguaje visual de las figuras Frocasian que Davis ha desarrollado durante más de veinte años. Un lado presenta una figura sentada en un momento de reflexión y vulnerabilidad. La parte posterior contiene numerosos ojos y orienta el significado de la obra hacia temas como el testimonio, la vigilancia, la responsabilidad, la raza y la memoria comunitaria. La obra invita al público a caminar a su alrededor y descubrir cómo cambia su significado desde distintos puntos de vista.
El proyecto está concebido como un importante punto de referencia visual para Triangle Park, respetando al mismo tiempo el carácter y el uso actual del lugar. La propuesta conserva los asientos, los árboles, la pequeña biblioteca comunitaria y el acceso peatonal del parque. También contempla mejoras paisajísticas moderadas y un área despejada para caminar alrededor de la escultura, integrándola con el jardín existente.
La participación comunitaria ha sido fundamental para el proyecto. Davis ha presentado la propuesta a residentes y organizaciones locales, conversado con negocios del vecindario, recopilado firmas y cartas de apoyo, y consultado con agencias del Distrito.
El proyecto continúa en fase de propuesta y depende de la obtención de fondos, la ingeniería, los permisos y las aprobaciones finales del sitio.
